THE GREY BOX
You took a long time, said Luzia, before she opened her eyes. Antônio was outside, sitting on the low step at the entrance, with the dust of the road caught in the hem of his trousers and the two burnt fingers hidden inside his closed hand. The threshold reader had recognised his face a short while before, but the door had stayed still while the household panel compared his return against the three presences kept in the house. Ilva woke beside the mat, the damp bandage between her fingers. The man was still behind the partition, not moving his injured foot. Luzia sat up quickly. You brought an answer to my voice message. Antônio looked at her as if the son's name had filled the whole road there. I brought tiredness, he said. Then he raised his eyes to Ilva. Who else is here. The house projected the outlines above the entrance. Two recognised residents. One conditional presence. The last line remained open, thin, waiting for the titleholder to touch the decision with his palm or refuse by moving his body away. The man came out of the corridor with his hand against the wall. The dark membrane on his heel showed above his shoe. Antônio saw him whole for the first time, saw his bowl in the kitchen, the shirt hanging near the partition, the grey box propped against the bench. The refrigerator door still made a ramp under the porch, useless at that hour, with the reflective film trembling at the top. Ilva spoke before the panel could imitate another voice. He stayed because I let him. Antônio lowered his head. The road had left a pale mark on his face, where sweat had opened two paths down to his chin. You let him by using what. By using the house. Luzia held the end of her plait. The question stayed between the adults, heavy as Nael's bowl hidden under the counter. Antônio came in a step. The threshold lit a blue band around his ankle and asked for continuity of title. His iris answered without his asking. The house cleared the way to the kitchen. It was then that the panel brought the charge. It did not come as a water or power notice. A short table appeared on the wall, made to look like an offer. Companhia Arco Norte announced a territorial transformation credit. Whoever agreed to cede right-of-way priority to the new processing unit would receive a household discount for eight cycles. The house would join the local industrial consumption queue, with a price adjustment once the metal stopped leaving raw. Below, the discount came to two meals. What it took in exchange covered the yard, the buried line and the residents' preference to remain. Antônio read it twice. The burnt finger opened a little, then closed. They want to make magnets near here, said Luzia. They want to charge first, he answered. The projection itemised the price. The first cycle would be paid by the house even without signing up, as a readiness fee for the promised processing. The second charge would depend on Antônio's authentication. The third came already calculated on the man's conditional presence. Three bodies under that roof were worth more reserved capacity for the Companhia. The metal left the valley in low lorries and came back as a word of industry, hanging above a kitchen with no clean flour. The man took a step back. I'll go before you touch that. The blue band answered his words with a brief glow. Ilva watched the bill rearrange itself. Without him, the house would lose the conditional confirmation and be left with an occupancy discrepancy. With him, the new tariff would grow on the address. The panel did not ask for affection. It asked for human square metres. Antônio rested his good hand on the doorframe. You can walk. I can. Then why are you standing still. The man looked at Ilva. She did not call him. Luzia got down from the mat and went to the kitchen, where she picked up his bowl. It had been dry since the night before. The girl set the bowl beside Antônio's, leaving a narrow space between them, enough for a spoon. He's here because the house let him, said Luzia. The house doesn't let anything, said Antônio. Ilva saw the man's mouth harden. The sentence had reached all three, but each received a different part. She pulled at the bandage on her hand with her teeth, tightening the knot that was starting to give. The cut under the skin throbbed when she tried to close her fingers. Nael died, she said. The panel blanked the offer for a second. The street stayed empty. Across the yard, the murici let fall a dry leaf onto the hard ground. Antônio did not ask how. He sat on the bench near the wall, slowly, and left his burnt hand on his knees. Luzia went close to him, without touching. The man stayed by the partition, his weight shifted onto his good leg. His bowl is still here, said the girl. Antônio looked at the empty place between the two bowls. Then he looked at Ilva. You knew. She nodded. And didn't tell me. I tried. You tried to send too much to a screen that charges even for silence, he said. His voice came out low, almost without strength. Then he ran his eyes over the house, the grey box, the makeshift corridor, the refrigerator door torn off. Every thing seemed to have waited for his return to accuse him. The charge reappeared. The deadline for bodily authentication read forty minutes. Antônio could refuse the industrial priority and take on the readiness fee alone. He could accept integration and hand over the yard for the machines' water to pass through. He could withdraw the man's conditional presence, lowering the bill and opening another dispute over the house. He stood up. He walked to the mouth of the corridor. The man did not step back. Stay until I understand what they've done here, said Antônio. The panel reduced the conditional presence to a smaller line. It did not confirm residence, did not open an exit. It only postponed the expulsion for the length of the review. Luzia tugged at the hem of Antônio's trousers. And when you understand, she asked, where will you send him.
